Over the past few years, the subject matter of my paintings has remained unchanged. However, the intensity by which I delve into or ‘excavate’ the great paintings of the past continues to evolve.
The paintings rely on geometry and the spontaneous. Though I am drawn towards the ideas of the surrealists I continue to succumb to the old artistic ways of order and measure.
I appropriate historical images not simply to re-position or re-interperet, the paintings are more a result of a ‘great dig’, the found pieces are then suspended within a modern urban grid.
The finished paintings are ambitious yet humble, shaking off their historical dust to reveal themselves within the primacy of colour. I hope to, as Rothko once said, create a place, not a picture.
