Robert Indiana nait à New Castle en 1928. Il change son nom de famille « Clark » afin de prendre celui de l’État où il habite. Il étudie à l’Institut d’art de Chicago en Indiana puis se rend à New York où sa réputation croît rapidement.

En 1961 le Musée d’art moderne de New York acquiert l’une de ses peintures et en 1966 son fameux « Love show » inaugure la Stable Gallery. Ainsi commence une longue association avec le mot « LOVE » qu’il réalise avec différents médiums. En 1966 il expose également au Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, au Museum Haus Lange, Krefeld, ainsi qu’au Württembergische Kunstverein, Stuttgart. En 1968, il prend part à la Documenta de Kassel. En 1998, le Musée d’art moderne et d’art contemporain de Nice lui consacre une rétrospective et en 2003-2004, la Paul Kasmin Gallery de New York présente une exposition solo de ses œuvres.

Robert Indiana was born in New Castle, Indiana, in 1928. His family name was Clark which he later changed, taking the name of his home state. After studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Indiana moved to New York where he quickly made a name for himself.

In 1961 the Museum of Modern Art, New York, acquired a painting, and in 1966 his ‘LOVE show’ opened at the Stable Gallery, the start of a long association with the LOVE image which has been realized in many different media. In 1966 he had exhibitions in the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, the Museum Haus Lange, Krefeld and the Württembergische Kunstverein, Stuttgart. He was represented at the Documenta, Kassel (1968). In 1998 a retrospective exhibition opened at the Musée d’Art Moderne et d’Art Contemporain, in Nice, solo exhibitions were held at the Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York (2003, 2004)
