Artiste américain célèbre et prolifique,  Chuck Close se consacre exclusivement depuis près d’une quarantaine d’années à l’exploration du portrait. Sa propre image, plus que toute autre, constitue la pierre angulaire de son œuvre à laquelle il se réfère continuellement. À partir d’un document photographique, Close transpose soigneusement son image à la surface d’un support en utilisant une grille où s’entrecroisent les emprunts à la peinture, au dessin, à la photographie, au collage ainsi qu’à l’art d’impression. Il en résulte un travail hybride dans lequel se fusionnent à la fois des procédés manuels et mécaniques. L’artiste explore les frontières entre le personnel et le social, la subjectivité et l’objectivité, ainsi que l'abstraction et la représentation.

A prolific and celebrated artist, Chuck Close has worked for nearly four decades within a carefully defined practice focused exclusively on portraiture. Close's own image, more than any other, is the touchstone to which he regularly returns. Starting with a source photograph, Close carefully transposes his image to a canvas or other surface using a grid. Cross-referencing painting, drawing, photography, collage, and printmaking, the resulting works are truly hybrid objects that merge manual and mechanical processes and explore boundaries between the personal and the social, the subjective and the systematic, the abstract and the representational.
