David Bierk est né en 1944 à Appleton au Minnesota. Il grandit dans la région de la baie de San Francisco et étudie Au California College of Arts & Crafts à Oakland, puis enseigne les arts dans les Bahamas pendant plusieurs années. Il revient finalement en Californie pour étudier au Humboldt State University à Areata, où il obtient son diplôme des Beaux-Arts en peinture et en photographie. 

En 1972, Bierk immigre au Canada et enseigne à Peterborough, en Ontario. Il fonde Artspace en 1974, un centre dirigé par des artistes qu’il gère jusqu’en 1987. C’est durant cette période qu’il décide de se dédier à temps plein à sa carrière d’artiste. Peintre passionné et exposant prolifique. Bierk établit avec succès une réputation internationale pour son oeuvre.

Père de huit enfants, il vivra et peindra à Peterborough jusqu’ à ce qu’il décède d’une leucémie en août 2002. Il a notament été nommé membre de l’Académie royale des arts du Canada en 1998 et on lui remit la médaille du jubilé d’or de la Reine é titre posthume en 2002.

David Bierk was born in Appleton, Minnesota, in 1944 and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. He studied at the California College of Arts & Crafts in Oakland, California, and subsequently taught art in the Bahamas for several years. He returned to California to study at Humboldt State University in Arcata, where he received an M.F.A. in painting and photography.

Bierk immigrated to Canada in 1972 and took up a teaching position in Peterborough, Ontario. In 1974 he founded Artspace, an artist-run centre, that he directed until 1987. It was then that he decided to devote himself to the full-time pursuit of his career as an artist. A passionate painter and a prolific exhibitor, Bierk successfully established an international reputation for his work.

He had eight children and lived and painted in Peterborough until his death from leukemia in August 2002. In 1998, he was elected a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, and in 2002 was posthumously awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal.
